The Grand Canyon of the Bed

We finally received our mattress on Wednesday. We must have been the first delivery of the day, because our mattress practically fell out of the truck when they opened the door. 7:30 am and in they came, removing the plastic cover and depositing it on the bed. The TOO big bed frame!

You heard me. The frame is too big for the mattress. I called my cousin Nicki who has a new bed to see if this was normal and apparently it is. I'm wondering if it's normal to have such a big gap as we have. Personally I think we have the Grand Canyon of gaps. So I've been stuffing normal sized pillows in there, which I've been buying like crazy at Target ($5!) and Ikea ($6!). I say 'normal-sized pillows', because Kevin can't stand 'decorative pillows' they must be usable pillows.

Despite the grand canyon at the top of our bed, Kevin's been sleeping great. As to me, well the bed's a little firmer than I thought it would be. I didn't sleep well the first night and the second night I had a nightmare that I was being attacked by the Foosa from "Madagascar." Don't ask, I have no idea what that means.

Cryptic Message: To all of you who are wondering if the photo has more evidence of you know what, you're right, it does.

Ice Tea in the Kitchen

'Iced Tea' is the latest contestant for the new wall color in the kitchen. At least that's what we think. We decided this past weekend that we really liked the wall color in the Frederick Panera Bread Co. We had taken swatches in with us, but none of them quite matched. Yesterday I went to Home Depot and picked up every orange colored swatch of Behr paint that they had.

I was down in Gaithersburg, so I went to Panera there. Wouldn't you know that their walls were yellow and red. I ran around the store like a mad woman eyeing up every wall in hopes that one was painted orange. Nope.

Last night I stopped at the Frederick Panera with my swatches in tow and I couldn't believe it, but the 'Iced Tea' swatch was the winner. We were really surprised as it has much more of a brown tone in it than orange. I'll be pasting it on the wall in our kitchen and eyeing it up for the next few days while I try to decide. Why must picking a color be so difficult?

Voice of the House

You would think that the house would be happy, not really being pounded on or painted this weekend. We decided to take a break this holiday so that we could relax and not feel like every waking moment is consumed by the house.

I did a little painting and touching up on Monday morning, but otherwise, we left the house alone. This morning as Kevin was taking his shower, our super-sensitive fire detector started screaming at us. Apparently the steam coming out of the bathroom was cause for alarm.

I think the house was yelling at us to get up and get started on it for the day. Sigh.

The Dresser Debacle

There's always a lesson to be learned from this house and Friday's lesson was to "Call Ahead." The Storehouse Outlet in Baltimore, which is an hour away from us, has been keeping an eye out for a matching dresser to go with our bed frame. Emma, my awesome salesclerk, called me Friday afternoon with great news. The bed was nearly 40% off and had no scratches, chips, just a little ding.

Unfortunately, you cannot put items on hold at the Storehouse unless you pay for them. I didn't want to spend that much money without seeing the item, so I told her I would be there that night or first thing in the morning.

I called Kevin and used a crowbar approach to get him to come home early from work with the 4Runner so we could go get the dresser. After rushing there we arrived about five hours after her call and it was sold. I should have listened to Kevin who said we should call before we leave. And I should have rushed right over and bought it. Lesson learned and it was a hard lesson, because no new dresser.
